At the prestigious ACCSI 2024 Instruments and Detection 3i Award Ceremony, Mr. Yang Peiqiang, Chairman of Suzhou Newmai Analytical Instruments Co., Ltd., was honored with the “2023 Special Contribution to R&D in the Scientific Instrument Industry Award.” This recognition not only acknowledges Mr. Yang’s outstanding contributions in research and technological innovation, but also celebrates the continuous innovation and forward-looking spirit of the entire Newmai Analytical team.

Over the past few decades of technological innovation, driven by the vision of bringing magnetic resonance applications into every household, Mr. Yang Peiqiang has led Newmai Analytical through a journey of over 20 years of scientific research and exploration. His forward-thinking vision and excellent organizational leadership have propelled the company to significant achievements in technological innovation and product development. Furthermore, through building close partnerships with top universities, Mr. Yang has led the Newmai team in creating remarkable breakthroughs in scientific instrumentation. These collaborations have enriched the technological landscape of the scientific instrument industry and paved the way for the transformation of research achievements, making an indelible contribution to the overall growth and development of the sector.

The collaboration between Suzhou Newmai Analytical and Shanghai University of Technology represents an 18-year-long exemplary model of industry-university collaboration. In 2006, Professor Nie Shengdong from Shanghai University of Technology was seeking an NMR analyzer for teaching medical imaging engineering students. At that time, most universities could only rely on outdated equipment provided by hospitals, which lacked full functionality and severely impacted the quality of teaching. Upon learning that Newmai Analytical possessed the right instruments, Professor Nie actively sought cooperation. Both parties reached a consensus during discussions, agreeing to upgrade the existing teaching instrument into a domestically produced high-end low-field NMR analyzer, hoping to break the technological monopoly of developed countries in this field.

In this collaboration, Mr. Yang Peiqiang led the Newmai team to work closely with Professor Nie’s team to overcome technical challenges. After tireless efforts, they successfully developed a sleek, easy-to-operate, and powerful teaching analysis instrument. They also developed a comprehensive suite of application method research and analytical software tailored to different fields’ specific detection and analysis requirements, significantly expanding the instrument’s application areas. This achievement not only promoted the domestic application of NMR teaching instruments but also nurtured a large number of professionals, achieving deep integration of industry, academia, and research, and making a significant contribution to the development of domestic low-field NMR technology.

In the early days of Newmai’s establishment, the domestic low-field NMR technology sector was still in its infancy. Faced with this challenge, Mr. Yang Peiqiang did not shy away, but instead took bold steps forward, actively exploring the development of domestic low-field NMR technology. He knew that merely developing teaching instruments for NMR was far from sufficient. To popularize low-field NMR technology in every household, it was essential to closely integrate it with practical applications and develop analytical instruments that truly met market needs.

In 2007, Mr. Yang Peiqiang led the Newmai team to establish a close partnership with Professor Deng Shaoping from Zhejiang Gongshang University. Professor Deng sought to use NMR technology to study the quality of meat products, which aligned perfectly with Newmai’s R&D goals. Through continuous efforts and exploration, the Newmai team, in collaboration with Zhejiang Gongshang University, developed the NMI20 Low-field NMR Imaging Analyzer for research purposes, which was awarded the Shanghai High-tech Achievement Transformation Certification. This achievement marked a significant step forward in the innovative application of low-field NMR technology for rapid food detection.

In the field of oil exploration and development, the impact of high-temperature and high-pressure environments on reservoir properties has always been a major challenge for researchers. In 2010, Mr. Yang Peiqiang partnered with Tsinghua University’s research team to custom-develop the first Magnetic Resonance High-Temperature High-Pressure Displacement System.

During the R&D process, the team encountered unprecedented challenges in design and material selection. They had to ensure that the system could operate stably under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions while maintaining high-precision data analysis capabilities. Faced with these rigorous demands, the research team persevered, working day and night to conduct experiments, optimize designs, and explore new possibilities. After numerous failures and retries, they successfully developed the first Magnetic Resonance High-Temperature High-Pressure Displacement System.

This system’s launch enabled online testing of displacement experiments and allowed for the observation of the flow patterns of pores with different diameters under various experimental conditions. It has provided strong data support for oilfield development and production, significantly advancing technological progress in the petroleum industry.

The National Corn Improvement Center at China Agricultural University, led by Professor Chen Shaojiang, is one of the country’s top research teams in corn breeding. They faced a problem during seed selection and breeding, needing to measure oil and moisture content in corn seeds. Traditional methods, which involved grinding seeds and extracting solvents for oil content testing, were inefficient and destructive to the seeds—especially for rare or valuable seeds.

In 2012, Mr. Yang Peiqiang led Newmai Analytical to collaborate with Professor Chen Shaojiang’s team at China Agricultural University to successfully develop the online NMR oilseed sorting system. This innovative technology not only enabled rapid detection without direct contact with the sample, but also integrated automatic sampling, measurement, and sorting functions. Each seed’s detection took only four seconds, with no manual intervention, achieving a daily processing capacity of up to 20,000 seeds.

Additionally, the team faced the challenge of integrating NMR technology with automation systems. This required interdisciplinary knowledge and close teamwork. After countless experiments and trials, they overcame technical difficulties and realized a world-first integrated detection technology. This breakthrough not only greatly improved research efficiency and revolutionized the breeding industry, but also earned Newmai the 2015 BCEIA Gold Award and other honors, marking a major leap from research-oriented to industrial-level solutions.

Under the leadership of Mr. Yang Peiqiang, Newmai has always focused on advancing scientific progress and meeting customer needs, striving to transform theoretical research into practical applications. His leadership and innovative spirit have injected new momentum into the low-field NMR industry, bringing a series of precise, efficient scientific instrument solutions. In the future, Newmai Analytical will continue to move forward under Mr. Yang’s guidance, working hand in hand with our partners to drive technological development through innovation. We will deepen our collaboration with universities and enterprises, gather more wisdom and strength, and bring more groundbreaking innovations to the low-field NMR industry, contributing to its continued prosperity and development.
