On December 18, 2024, Professor Lin Shengcai’s team from Xiamen University published a research paper titled “Lithocholic acid phenocopies anti-ageing effects of calorie restriction” in the prestigious journal *Nature*. The study found that lithocholic acid (LCA) phenocopies the anti-ageing effects of calorie restriction (CR). Researchers used metabolomics to analyze metabolites whose abundance changed during CR, followed by functional validation. The study revealed that lithocholic acid (LCA), a metabolic product, can reproduce the effects of CR in mice when used alone. These effects include activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), enhanced muscle regeneration, and restoration of grip strength and running ability. LCA also activates AMPK and induces lifespan and healthspan extension in *Caenorhabditis elegans* (C. elegans) and *Drosophila melanogaster* (fruit flies). Since C. elegans and D. melanogaster cannot synthesize LCA, these results suggest that once administered, these animals can transmit the signaling effects of LCA. In all three animal models, AMPK knockout eliminated the LCA-induced phenotype. In conclusion, this study identifies that the sole application of the CR-mediated upregulated metabolite LCA can provide anti-ageing benefits in postembryonic animals in an AMPK-dependent manner.

It is worth mentioning that the key body composition data for this study was accurately completed with the low-field NMR instrument QMR06-090H from Suzhou New Mai Analytical Instruments Co., Ltd., once again showcasing the core value of domestic scientific instruments in cutting-edge life sciences research!

The team used this device to perform non-invasive, dynamic monitoring of mouse body composition. Through low-field NMR technology, it is possible to accurately measure lean body mass, fat ratio, and free water content in live mice within seconds, providing crucial data support for evaluating the impact of LCA on muscle function and metabolic health.

This achievement not only opens a new path for the anti-ageing field but also highlights the technological strength of domestic high-end scientific instruments. New Mai’s low-field NMR technology, known for its precision, efficiency, and stability, has become the “invisible engine” of life sciences research, propelling Chinese scientific research to the forefront of global innovation.

From metabolic mechanism analysis to healthspan extension, from basic research to technology application, New Mai has always stood alongside scientists, empowering life science exploration with innovative technology! We look forward to more groundbreaking achievements where the wisdom of Chinese instruments shines through!
