Niumag Technology officially launched its NMR Awake Small-Animal Body Composition Analyser in 2015, offering a six-month trial service (ending 30 June 2015). Enquiries are welcome.
The awake-animal body composition technique is based on the principle of NMR. By distinguishing signals with different relaxation characteristics, it enables rapid, quantitative, and precise measurement of fat mass, lean tissue, free water, and total body water in live animals. The system can analyse species ranging from 2 mg fruit flies, organs, mice, rats, and birds, to humans. Compared with other methods, NMR body composition analysis is fast (0.5–3 minutes), requires no anaesthesia or sacrifice, causes no harm to animals, and allows continuous longitudinal tracking of the same subject. This delivers robust data for research. Applications are widespread in obesity, diabetes, metabolism, nutrition, obesity mechanisms, and drug development.
1. Obesity research
2. Diabetes studies
3. Nutritional research
4. Pharmacology
5. Cardiology and related fields
1. Measurement of fat content
2. Measurement of lean mass
3. Measurement of free water content
4. Fat-distribution imaging
5. Whole-body muscle, fat, and water content assessment within minutes
6. Compatible with different animal positions; sample placement does not affect results
7. Permanent magnet with no maintenance costs; low operating expenses
8. Suitable for nude mice, mice, and rats
9. Non-destructive testing; no risk to animals
10. Animals tested while awake; no anaesthesia required; simple workflow
