Cutting-Edge Application | On-Site Mobile Full-Diameter NMR for Rapid Characterization of Reservoir Physical Properties

Published on: 2024-11-21 09:36

National energy security has entered a critical stage, requiring a solid foundation for energy supply, improved resource allocation, enhanced oil and gas production capabilities, and a balanced overall supply-demand relationship. In traditional field operations, reservoir property testing mainly relies on logging while drilling. However, complex subsurface conditions, including high temperatures, high pressures, acidic or alkaline environments, and diverse mineral compositions, significantly affect test accuracy[1]. Moreover, transporting samples to specialised laboratories can lead to fluid loss within the samples, complicating both quantitative and qualitative testing. Additionally, the timeliness of results is often insufficient for modern high-efficiency industrial development, reducing the guiding value of reservoir research for exploration and production[2]. On-site full-diameter NMR effectively combines the immediacy of traditional field testing with the precision of laboratory analysis.

Mobile full-diameter NMR can measure large core samples, providing a comprehensive description of the true pore structure in highly heterogeneous reservoirs. Its high representativeness allows for rapid, continuous, non-destructive, and high-precision one-dimensional T2 and two-dimensional T1-T2 NMR measurements immediately after core retrieval, with rapid data processing and interpretation. This delivers near in situ, high-fidelity test data, enabling reliable on-site acquisition of formation porosity, pore structure, fluid properties, and oil saturation. Field applications have demonstrated that this technology has become an essential tool for evaluating sweet spots in shale and tight oil exploration, reservoir identification, and resource assessment.

Full-diameter standard sample test verification

After validation with standard samples of known properties, Newmae deployed the full-diameter NMR product to on-site oilfield exploration and production for real core testing, with the results as follows:

On-site oilfield testing results and analysis

The above results are from a pre-production shale oil well in the oilfield. Full-diameter NMR analysis on-site identified favourable reservoir intervals: one-dimensional NMR confirmed the dual-peak T2 spectrum as indicative of advantageous reservoirs with well-developed large pores and porosity of 7.51%, while two-dimensional NMR determined an oil saturation of 73.8%. This data provides timely and reliable rock physics evidence for well development.
