From 13 to 16 June 2023, the Advanced Training Course on Low-Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Technology and Applications (2023A01), organised by the NMR Expert Group of the Analytical Instruments Branch of the Chinese Society for Instrumentation, was successfully held in Suzhou.

The training was co-hosted by Suzhou Niumag Analytical Instruments Co., Ltd. and Suzhou Tainuo Testing Services Co., Ltd., under the commission of the NMR Expert Group of the Analytical Instruments Branch.

The lecturers for the 2023A01 session included experts from the Physics Teaching and Experiment Centre of Fudan University, the National Postdoctoral Research Station of Suzhou Niumag, the Niumag Innovative Education Centre, and Suzhou Tainuo Testing. The programme aimed to promote NMR technology and its applications, enabling participants to master essential theories and practical skills, and to better understand and apply low-field NMR across various industries and research fields.

This NMR training focused on applications across multiple domains, including petroleum and energy, geology and mining, materials and chemical engineering, and food and agriculture. A total of 18 participants attended, including professors, PhD and master students, and engineers from 10 domestic universities and research institutes, such as Changsha University of Science & Technology, Henan University of Technology, Jilin University, Nanjing Forestry University, Shanghai University, Southwest Petroleum University, China University of Mining and Technology, Sun Yat-sen University, China Institute of Atomic Energy, CNOOC Experimental Centre (Shenzhen), and Suzhou Tainuo Testing Services Co., Ltd.

Hosted by Professor Yan Jun, Executive Director of Suzhou Niumag Innovation Research Institute

On 14 June, the opening ceremony was held at Suzhou Niumag Analytical Instruments Co., Ltd., chaired by Professor Yan Jun, Executive Director of Suzhou Niumag Innovation Research Institute and geophysics expert. Professor Yan warmly welcomed participants from across China and invited them to introduce themselves, fostering an academic atmosphere and encouraging interaction. This introduction session helped participants connect, exchange experiences, and inspire mutual learning throughout the training.

Speech by Ms. Li Xianghong, General Manager of Suzhou Niumag Analytical

Next, Ms. Li Xianghong, General Manager of Suzhou Niumag Analytical, delivered a welcome address. She introduced the company’s development history, core values, and product applications, providing participants with a deeper understanding of Suzhou Niumag Analytical. She concluded by wishing the attendees a fruitful learning experience, encouraging them to apply the training in their work and contribute to advancing NMR technology and national scientific innovation in China.

The training combined theoretical learning with hands-on practice. At the start, Dr. Feng from Shanghai Tainuo Science & Education, Mr. Yao from Fudan University, and engineers from Suzhou Niumag systematically explained the development of NMR technology, imaging principles, variable-field NMR, NMR analysis software, imaging software, and data & image processing tools.

As the course progressed, lectures were delivered by Professor Yan Jun (Postdoctoral Station Director of Niumag Analytical, PhD in Applied Geophysics from the University of Edinburgh), Postdoctoral researcher Dr. Hua (Shanghai University, Petroleum Engineering), Postdoctoral researcher Dr. Ying (Lanzhou University of Technology), and Dr. Lin (Master’s in Food Science & Engineering, Dalian Polytechnic University), covering applications in petroleum and energy, geology and mining, food and agriculture, materials science, and NMR data processing techniques, illustrated with real-world case studies.

On the final day, participants engaged in hands-on sessions. Under the guidance of professional lab engineers, attendees gained direct experience with a variety of NMR instruments and applied these skills to their respective research areas.

The training was tailored to participants from different fields through group-based instruction. Instructors demonstrated the operation of various NMR instruments, provided case studies, and taught calibration, parameter selection, and experimental data processing, enabling participants to independently conduct sample analyses.

After three days of combined theory and practical sessions, participants acquired core NMR knowledge, experimental and imaging analysis techniques, and deeper expertise in applying NMR across multiple domains. They also mastered device operation, parameter settings, and the testing of standard samples using NMR instruments.

This training programme offered rich and practical content, earning high praise from all participants. We look forward to the next Advanced Training Course on Low-Field NMR Technology and Applications, meeting again in beautiful Suzhou to explore the evolving landscape of NMR applications together.
