Inaugural Meeting of the Borehole Geophysics Committee of the Chinese Geophysical Society Held in Beijing

On August 27, 2018, the inaugural meeting of the Borehole Geophysics Professional Committee of the Chinese Geophysical Society was officially held. This event was jointly initiated by the Chinese Geophysical Society, the Institute of Acoustics (Chinese Academy of Sciences), and China University of Petroleum (East China), and attended by 69 representatives from 40 organizations. Participants included experts and scholars from the Institute of Acoustics, Institute of Geology and Geophysics, and Institute of Geochemistry (CAS); China University of Petroleum (East China and Beijing), Southwest Petroleum University, Yangtze University, Northeast Petroleum University, China University of Geosciences (Beijing and Wuhan), Chengdu University of Technology, Peking University, Tianjin University, Jilin University, Southern University of Science and Technology, Qilu University of Technology, Xiamen University, as well as representatives from major state-owned enterprises like CNPC, Sinopec, CNOOC, BGP, CETC No.22 Research Institute, and innovative high-tech companies including Suzhou Niumag Analytical Instrument Co., Ltd.

The inaugural meeting and the first committee session of the Borehole Geophysics Professional Committee (hereafter referred to as “the Committee”) were held in Beijing. Secretary-General Guo Jian of the Chinese Geophysical Society attended and chaired the inauguration ceremony. Li Fenghua, Deputy Director of the Institute of Acoustics (CAS), delivered a speech on behalf of the hosting organization.

On behalf of the Secretary-General, Researcher Chen Dehua from the Institute of Acoustics introduced the election plan for the first committee. The plan was unanimously approved by the delegates through on-site discussion and two rounds of anonymous voting. The first vote successfully elected 64 committee members, and Prof. Wang Xiuming from the Institute of Acoustics (CAS) was unanimously elected as the inaugural Chair of the Committee.

Following the election, Chairperson Wang nominated candidates for Vice Chairs, Secretary-General, Executive Deputy Secretary-General, and Deputy Secretaries-General. In the second round of anonymous voting, Researcher Chen Dehua was unanimously elected as Secretary-General. Additional appointments included 15 Vice Chairs, such as Prof. Fan Yiren (China University of Petroleum – East China), Chief Engineer Tang Tianzhi (CNPC Logging Company), Chief Expert Dong Jingli (Sinopec Shengli Petroleum Engineering), Thousand Talents Scholar Chen Wenxuan (IGG, CAS), and Vice President Guo Haimin (Yangtze University). Prof. Yan Jun, Director of Niumag’s National Postdoctoral Research Workstation, was elected as a committee member.

The first committee meeting was chaired by Prof. Wang Xiuming and included the review and approval of the Committee’s operational guidelines and leadership structure. Based on the Society’s directives, the committee awarded Prof. Tang Xiaoming (Thousand Talents Program, China University of Petroleum) the honorary title of “Honorary Chair.” The proposal to establish a Scientific Committee and a Working Committee was also approved in principle, and their primary leaders were appointed.

The 2018 work plan was discussed in detail, with active input from attending members on key priorities, future events, and long-term strategic goals. This marks the official launch of the Chinese Geophysical Society’s 22nd professional committee, showcasing institutional innovation in structure and governance.

The founding of the Borehole Geophysics Committee will go down as a historic milestone. The committee will now lead China’s borehole geophysics researchers in advancing toward the global scientific frontier and addressing major national strategic needs in deep-earth exploration.
